Hornets sign point guard Shakur

The New Orleans Hornets have signed free-agent point guard Mustafa Shakur. General manager Dell Demps says the 6-foot-4 Shakur has good size for a point guard and got the Hornets' attention by thriving in the NBA Development League last season. Undrafted out of Arizona, the 26-year-old Shakur was been with several NBA teams since 2007 but has yet to play in a regular-season game.

The Hornets were late in bringing in veteran players this offseason, but when they got started, they made notable moves.

First they acquired forward Trevor Ariza in a four-team trade by shipping backup point guard Darren Collison and reserve forward James Posey to the Pacers. Then they acquired shooting guard Marco Belinelli from the Raptors in exchange for former first-round draft choice Julian Wright.

The Ariza trade sent a strong message that new general manager Dell Demps plans to build around All-Star point guard Chris Paul rather than acquiesce to Paul's reported trade demand. The departure of Collison leaves no viable replacement for Paul if he were to be traded, and the acquisitions of Ariza (and to a lesser extent Belinelli) show the Hornets are trying to convince...
