Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman expects to learn on Saturday whether his salary cap-squeezed team will be able to keep restricted free agent goaltender Antti Niemi of Finland. After Bowman and Niemi's agent, Bill Zito, were unable to reach contract terms for the 26-year-old, the case advanced to an arbitration hearing Thursday in Toronto.

The big news for the Blackhawks?
General manager Stan Bowman announced recently the Hawks are matching the San Jose Sharks' four-year, $14 million offer sheet for Niklas Hjalmarsson, keeping the promising young defenseman.
Bowman also said he remains in negotiations with Antti Niemi's camp and that he hopes to sign his Stanley Cup-winning goaltender before Niemi's arbitration hearing.
The sobering news for Hawks fans?
The Hawks, who were forced to gut their roster this summer, still have salary-cap issues courtesy of the Sharks, perennial contenders in the Western Conference. There are still tough decisions to make for Bowman.

The Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks have acquired center Jeff Taffe from the Florida Panthers in exchange for center Marty Reasoner.
