Vancouver plays hosts to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Vancouver is a notable choice to host the Winter Games for two reasons. First, Vancouver is the largest city to have ever hosted the Winter Games, and it is also the "hottest." Vancouver's average temperate during the Februrary events is around 40 degrees. This marks the 3rd time for a Canadian city to host the games. Vancouver beat out fellow Canadian metroplises of Calgary and Quebec City for consideration as a host city, and eventually won out over PyeongChang, South Korea, and Salzburg, Austria. Opening, Closing Ceremonies, and ice events will occur at the BK Place Stadium in Vancouver, the largest air-supported stadium in the world. The covering on BK Place will mark the first time Opening Ceremonies have occured indoors. General Motors Place, which will be temporary renamed the Canada Hockey Place due to IOC rules against corporate venue sponsorship, will host hockey ice hockey events. Pacific Coliseum and Hillcrest Park will feature figure skating and curling respectively.
The 2010 Winter Games will feature 86 sports under 3 classifications, ice sports, alpine sports, and Nordic sports. Women's hockey and skicross are 2 new events that have been accepted for the Vancouver Winter Games. Hockey will be played at the General Motors Place arena on a standard NHL-sized ring, a first for the Winter Games.
